Project Managing a Conference

Hello! I’ve been volunteering at the Centre for three years now and have had the chance to get involved in some really great projects. I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you about my latest project. I project managed our 2013 conference on the new Children’s Hearing Act 2011. We had over 250 delegates attend this fantastic conference (you don’t have to take my word for it; you can listen to the audio recording of the conference here).

Being the project manager meant that I had to do everything from finding a venue to processing booking forms to drawing up a budget for the event. The great thing about volunteering with a small charity, like the SCLC, is that you get the chance to get involved in projects that would be given to someone with much more experience in the commercial sector. However, this doesn’t mean that you’re on your own. I worked under the close supervision of the Director and Office Manager, and thankfully they made all the important decisions. I was given lots of scope for independent work, but was always able to rely on lots of support and guidance. My first budget was returned with lots of post-it notes attached by our Office Manager (‘have you thought about this?’ ‘how much does this cost?’ ‘does this price include VAT?’) but after lots of cups of tea we had a lovely colour-coded spreadsheet that became the budget and I had learnt a new skill!

I also had lots of help from our great team of volunteers and interns who did a tremendous job. Many thanks to Bethan, Rachel, Jameela, Susanne, Josephine, Mateus, Emily, Seb, Joe, Camila and Bethan. We really couldn’t have done it without them!

The whole project has taken an entire year. Starting in August 2012 I spent one morning a week on the project until the conference in February 2013. After the conference there was still lots of paperwork and things that needed to be followed up until last week when our new Project Manager, Jameela, took over. Jameela will be in charge of organising the 2014 conference (the topic of which is soon to be announced!). Hopefully she will be blogging and tweeting about her experience so you can see what is involved. If you think being a Project Manager for the Centre is something you would like to do, get in touch! It takes a long time to train for the role and the Centre will be running events in 2015 that need organising!

I’ve left Jameela a big folder full of notes and tips to use for the next conference but i’m sure she will be great anyway!

Translating our Publications

Today us volunteers have come from all over the place, Scotland (Emily), Poland (Marta), Germany (Larissa) and Northern Ireland (Bethan).

There’s been lots of translating going on, some of us are better at it than others, we assume you don’t want documents translated into Scottish or Northern Irish :).

The SCLC is a great place to come meet lots of people from all over the world and learn about lots of different legal systems, so if you want to learn and have a load of fun, come join us!

The visit to the High Court of Justiciary

Good morning!

I started the day with a short trip to the High Court of Justiciary. My friend from Poland (Marta as well) visited me in Edinburgh. We study law together so aside from all the usual tourist attractions we couldn’t miss a visit to a Scottish court. The case was about sexual assault on children and was very disturbing. However, it was a good lesson because we could compare the Scottish trial to Polish one. Of course, there are many differences which arise from distinctiveness of our legal systems but we were also impressed with the organization of the court and the behaviour of advocates and judges. Very interesting experience!

Erasmus Internship Programme

I’m Marta from Poland. It has already been one month since I started at the Scottish Child Law Centre. My time here is a part of an Erasmus internship programme. I enjoy it a lot and I’m very happy that I was given the opportunity to work for the Centre. My main task this month was to order the database and create some statistics on various topics. It was very interesting to see the areas of legal problems the Centre is dealing with. I translated also three leaflets from English into Polish. I particularly like this task and hope that it will help more people to find the answer on their legal questions. During the last month I have also had the chance to go three times to the High Court of Justiciary. It was a very good experience and a great way to know the Scottish legal system better.

I’m waiting for my next tasks!

Hey

I’m Monica, and all this week I’ve had the opportunity to take a break from school and volunteer at the Scottish Child Law Centre. My time here is a coming to an end and I’ve been able to learn more about family law, which has been really interesting. Everyone at the centre is really nice, and I’ve gained more skills in Excel and learnt how to use Westlaw, which will be a valuable resource in the future. I’m really glad I’ve had a chance to volunteer and help out in the centre and have gained many valuable skills that I will be able to use.

Hi!

I’m part way through my second week now and I’m no longer the newbie. Alison started on Monday, so I feel I’ve been showing her the ropes a bit – hopefully I’ve been doing an alright job. I’m also just about finished with the case database and ready to get started on my next task. Also thankfully, I have gotten much better at Excel and I’m considering even putting it on my CV as a skill!

Leaflets

New Leaflets

One of the main jobs our volunteers do is send out information leaflets to the people who need them most. We also sell our leaflets to other organisations. The picture shows our newest leaflet which has just arrived and is waiting to be filed. The leaflet gives advice to teenage mothers. We have 1,500 copies to sort and store, so our volunteers will be busy this week!

Bake Sale

Bake Sale September 2012. We raised £100!

Hi!

I’m Charlotte.  I’m a law student from Dundee and I’m doing a Summer Internship here at the Scottish Child Law Centre.  I am now approaching the end of what has been a very interesting and insightful first week.

My main task this week has been helping to create a database of cases on various aspects of child law.  I’ve been doing this with use of Excel, which I’m just about managing to get my head around.  Hopefully, I will be an expert by the end of the month!  I have also been helping out with general office jobs and even got to sit in on some training, which I found really interesting.  I’ve learnt a lot already and everyone here is really nice.  I’m certainly looking forward to the remainder of my time here and hope I can do my best to help the Centre out, particular as the work they do here is invaluable.
